Water Fountain
Barcelona is an incredible city, one with art everywhere, whether it’s a Joan Miro below your feet or a Picasso on the side of a building. Even the buildings themselves can be art, as Gaudi expressed his genius throughout the city. It is an abundance of riches, and it doesn’t stop with the works of those artists we know. The details and designs of even simple things in the city are done with a sensitivity and flair for design and craft.
This water fountain was one of my favourite examples of the art that forms the foundation of Barcelona. Each face is so subtly different in expression and style. The square format of my Hasselblad was perfect for capturing the balance in the design, and the richness created by the bright taps and water marks.
I enjoy colour photography that is monochrome in some way, and the greys in this image, full of depth but still one colour palette are incredibly pleasing to me. Barcelona is such a riot of colour that finding this almost plain stone was an exciting photographic challenge.
