Venice
This photograph was taken in Venice a few years ago. It was my first, and until today, only visit. I had dreamt of visiting Venice for many years. As a lover of books, paper, book binding, printing, art, crafts, stories and history I had dreamt of visiting this improbable city for many years.
It more than lived up to my dreams. Everything I’d hoped would be amazing was better than I could have dreamt, and everything I thought would be crass and touristy, like the Gondola’s, somehow retained a sense of the real and genuine about it.
In the span of a few days I took more photographs of the streets and canals and bridges of Venice than I had anywhere else in years. This is one of my favourites, at once a Venetian cliche and the reality of so many lives throughout history. Personally I think his sunglasses make the photo.
Today I arrived in Venice with my sister Kim to visit the Venice Biennale for the first time and to research for one of her novels. I am beyond excited.
I promise to tell you all the stories next week (expect it on Tuesday as I will still be in Venice on Monday!)
