Recovery, exhibitions, and puppy play dates
Also, it was my birthday and I got myself a fun vintage gift.
Hi and Welcome to A Nomadic Rose! If you’ve found your way here but are not yet subscribed, you can do so HERE. You will never miss a letter, and I’ll be eternally grateful for your support.
Now on to this week’s musings…
It is tricky to write about anything of interest when I have much of the last two weeks recovering from surgery. Watching Doctor Who (bring on the 60th anniversary specials), sleeping, taking short walks, and managing to write a few funding applications as my brain slowly comes back online, hardly makes for an interesting letter. It is making for a successful recovery though, and I am steadily feeling better. It is slow going, and seems to come in waves, but I am going in the right direction.
It was my birthday on Friday, and I managed briefly to visit the seals at Godrevy and have gorgeous friends round for a feast cooked by my wonderful Mum. A few days before my birthday I was in so much pain that I almost cancelled the entire thing, certain it was going to be miserable and unmanageable. I am glad I didn’t. In the end it was gentle and joyous, and lifted by spirits hugely.
It was, in fact, the best day since my operation.
The second best had happened the week before with a visit from Finn’s sister Blueberry. For an hour and a half, I sat in a local secure field and watched the pups jump and run and roll about in a state of pure bliss. Because of his size Finn doesn’t get to play with many dogs, so having the chance to be a silly puppy with his sister was such a treat. These photos are courtesy of Cally, who owns Blueberry and Oreo (Finns Mum), and who kindly drove over to St Ives to bring Finn and I immense amounts of joy. We are already plotting the next playdate and I for one can’t wait!
One of the strange things about the timing of my surgery is that I have been unable to visit my exhibition at Botallack since hanging it. I return to it for the first time this Monday, and that was to take it down. It was great seeing that all the prints were still up and looking wonderful, and even more exciting to hear from staff at the café how many visitors the exhibition has received. This Saturday I will be installing it at the Crypt Gallery in St Ives, where I will be spending the week invigilating, and hopefully having some wonderful conversations about the photographs and wildfires.
On Saturday night there will be an opening event, for which I am planning some sweet treats that will showcase some of the foraged edibles I have gathered this autumn. These are plants that would have been growing at Zennor Head before the fire, so it feels appropriate they take their place in the exhibition. If you happen to be local, please do come and join us from 6pm.
You can also buy prints of each of the featured photographs at my print shop.
One of the things that happens when I am still for long periods, other than binging great TV, is that my imagination runs where my feet cannot. I am currently full of ideas. These gorgeous vintage tools, a birthday gift to myself, will hopefully help start bringing some of these ideas to life. I will let you know how the exhibition goes and share more of my new ideas in a fortnight. In the meantime, wish me luck and I hope you have an inspiring two weeks.
