Mangoes, $2.69 each
When I came home from travelling in Australia for a year I had the heart wrenching experience of most of my lovingly shot film being destroyed by the company developing them. Too sad to cope with the loss I put the remaining negatives into a folder and didn’t look at them again until last year, over ten years later.
As a result there are some shots I remember taking, some whose locations I can easily identify, moments I remember and recognised captured on film. There are also shots I have no clear memory of. This bright and cheerful hut proudly proclaiming its mangoes are $2.69 each is one such photo. I don’t know where I was, or how I came across this oh so Australian building. But I can tell from the photograph the joy I must have felt: the colours, the corrugated iron, the smudged chalk- it is perfect in every way.
