Lions in Venice
One of my favourite things about Venice are the lions. They sit on fountains, outside the Arsenale, on the sides of buildings, and as heraldic symbols on hand printed Venetian paper. Some looked strangely shocked or shy, some are fierce, and others have wings. The lion in this photo is on the side of St Mark's Campanile, the bell tower in St Marks Square.
There is so much I love about this photo, the brickwork, the windows, the framing, the perspective, the rich black and white contrast. But mostly I love the lion. He is why I took the photograph and it is a joy when the reason you took a photo transforms beautifully for the photographic medium.
