Saturday was Earth Day, an annual day set aside to demonstrate our support for environmental protection. It was begun in 1970 and is now a global event, with more than 1 billion people in 193 countries observing the day in different ways. As my career is dedicated to supporting the environment, I wanted to observe the day doing something different, something focused, something that wasn’t about making art. So, I prepared, planned, and woke up on Saturday ready for a day of Adventures in the Kitchen.
Cooking has brought me joy since I was a child, flavours and ingredients, invention and imagination. It is a sacred thing that gathers us together. When I sat down to create A Nomadic Rose, I knew it was something I would want to write about, hence this column for my lovely paid subscribers. However, over the last few months something has stopped me playing in the kitchen. I don’t know what exactly, except that perhaps I was waiting to share stories from my van kitchen and so was interrupting my own joy. Earth Day seemed the time to change that.
