There is a quote from the exceptional South African artist Nicholas Hlobo in which he says that, ‘As an artist you should be the one who sings off key.’
To me he isn’t suggesting that artists need to make something ugly or discordant. Rather he is suggesting that it is the artists job to be just a little out of step, a little different, an unexpected note that disrupts accepted societal norms.
That is certainly something Hlobo does.
