Its pancake day on Tuesday. Or to give it its proper name, Shrove Tuesday For many around the world and throughout history Shrove Tuesday marks the start of Lent, the the beginning of 40 days of fasting. Not being Christian, the religious meaning of the day doesn’t touch me personally. However, the day does mean a huge amount to me, because it happens to champion one of my favourite foods. Pancakes, or more properly crêpes, are loaded with meaning and memories from my earliest childhood to today. Memories of sharing food, memories of a stomach so full it hurts, memories of markets in England and France, memories of mornings when Kim and her husband Nick are staying and the question “what if pancakes?” is inevitably asked, memories of a party in a cowshed outside Glastonbury town on New Years Eve, memories of a YHA in Australia and cooking for everyone staying so my bed would be free for a few nights. You can find the glorious crêpe featured in stories from every stages of my life, generously adorned with lemon and sugar.
Strangely, one of the most common occurrences in my relationship with pancakes is forgetting to make them on Pancake Day. After all, when you eat them with the joy and regularity I do, they don’t need a day all their own. Still, as we approach Pancake Day this year, I thought I would share my crêpe recipe with you all. It’s a delicious one, guaranteed to give you the perfect pancake on Tuesday night.
